Gene Gateway - Exploring Genes

This website gives an overview of information on genes and genetic disorders. The chromosome viewer enables you to isolate a chromosome, view its composition and see the genes that have been identified on it. You can also do tutorials to learn about genetic Web resources.

The site is from the US Department of Energy, Biological and Environmental Research.

Online texts from Colorado State University

The Digestive system is an online textbook produced by Colorado State University. You can navigate through the book by using the links. It also contains diagrams to explain different topics.

Clicking on the Hypertextbook menu will bring up the other books in the series. These include the Endocrine System and Medical Genetics.

MDConsult books updated

MDConsult has just released updates for several of its textbooks. These include:

Importing from Google Scholar and Web of Science using Firefox

Q: I'm using Firefox as my browser. When I import from Google Scholar and Web of Science no citations appear.

A: When you select the Export to EndNote button in either Web of Science or Google Scholar you get a screen asking you which application/software you want to open this file with. You need to select EndNote the program (not your library)for this screen. Then you get a screen asking which library you want to place the references in. You can then select your library, click open and the references will appear.

Abbreviated journal titles in PubMed

Q: The journal titles of my PubMed references are abbreviated but Harvard requires me to have the journal title in full. How do I fix this?

A: The easiest way to fix this issue is to edit the references as you are importing them into your library. When you have the new references in EndNote in the temporary holding place, manually alter each reference by typing in the full journal title in the correct field. They will then be displayed correctly in your document.

If you have already started your document, change the journal titles in EndNote then in Word choose Format Bibliography from the EndNote toolbar. The journal titles will be changed to show the full title.

Quotations and Harvard

Q: How do I reference a quotation using Harvard?

A: The UTAS Library guide to Harvard referencing talks about the correct way to use quotations.

Generally speaking short quotations (less than three lines) are placed in single quotation marks and are placed in the sentence.

Quotations longer than three lines are usually indented.

Web of Science capitalisation of article titles

Q: The article titles from Web of Science come through in capitals. How can I change it?

A: First go to the Edit menu in EndNote. Then select output styles and Edit "Harvard 2002 X1 utas". From the menu on the left hand side select Title Capitalisation which appears under the Bibliography heading. You need to select the Sentence style capitalisation button.

Close the screen. You will be asked if you want to save the changes. Select yes.

The reference in your EndNote library will still appear in capitals but in the display window at the bottom it should be changed to normal capitalisation.

Page numbers for in text citations

Q: How do I insert page numbers in my in text citations when I'm quoting?

A: You need to first insert the relevant citation in your Word document. Next click on the in text citation to select it and then click on Edit Citation on the EndNote toolbar. This gives you the Edit Citation screen. There is a box on the right hand side named pages. You enter the relevant page number and click the OK button at the bottom. Your page number should then be inserted in your in text citation.

World Population Data sheet

The 2008 World Population Data Sheet is put out by the Population Reference Bureau and details information on current and projected population, infant mortality, nutrition information and population per square kilometre. Australian statistics can be found under the Oceania heading. It is useful to compare like countries.

The Population Reference Bureau website gives an overview of the information in the Data Sheet. You can also search by country and get more specific information such as life expectancy, literacy rates and school enrollment statistics.

Harvard referencing style

Removing duplicates

Q: How can I easily remove duplicates from my library?

A: From the References menu select Find Duplicates. One of each duplicated record will be highlighted. You can then either press the delete key or select Delete References from the references menu. In both cases you will be prompted with a screen asking if you wish to delete these records. Click the delete button in the box and the references disappear. Finally select Show all references to integrate the remaining references with the rest of your library.

Author's names display incorrectly

Q: How can I make my corporate author's name display correctly?

A: You need to place a comma after the author's name. For example Government of Tasmania, will display as Government of Tasmania.

Reference Types

Q: My book or website reference doesn't look right when its displayed. What's wrong?

A: You may have not selected the correct reference type when inserting the reference information. When creating a new entry to a library the default reference type is journal article. Make sure you choose the correct reference type (eg. conference proceeding, government document, book) from the drop down menu. This will give you the correct fields to fill in.

I can't find the correct Harvard style

Q: How can I get the correct Harvard style for my assignment?

A: If you download EndNote from the UTAS Library website you need to also download the Harvard 2002 X1 utas file. It can be found here. There are instructions on the EndNote page on where the file needs to be placed.

OR

If you have installed EndNote from a disc the disc will also contain of all the UTAS specific files. These can be installed straight onto your computer.

My reference list looks weird

Q: How do I change the way my reference list looks?

A: You can change your output (reference) style in two ways.

Firstly, using the edit menu in EndNote, select Output Styles then Open Style Manager. All the available styles will be listed. You need to choose the harvard 2002 X1 utas style. Tick the box next to the style and close the style manager. The correct Harvard will now be available for selection in the styles list in your library.

OR

You can change the output style from the drop down style menu at the top of your library. Choose select another style and the list of available styles will be shown. Select the harvard 2002 X1 utas style from the list. It will then be available in the styles list in your library.

How can I remove a citation from my document?

Q: How do I remove a citation from my Word document?

A: It is important to maintain the link between Word and EndNote. Instead of highlighting and deleting an in-text citation use the following steps:

Click on the relevant in-text citation in Word
Use the edit citation icon on the toolbar
The selected citation will be shown highlighted in the new screen
Choose the remove button
Click OK when all desired citations have been edited.

CWYW doesn't work properly

Q: When I insert citations I get a #number instead of a proper citation and no entry in my reference list.

A: Cite While You Write needs to be enabled. The #number is the reference's place in your library.
From the EndNote toolbar in Word select the Format Bibliography button.
Click the Instant Formatting tab
Click the enable button
Your document should be automatically reformatted.

No toolbar in Word

If your EndNote toolbar doesn't appear in Word after you have installed EndNote do the following:
Close any open Word documents
Access the Start menu from the bottom left hand corner of your desktop.
Select EndNote from the All Programs menu
Select Configure EndNote
Follow the wizard
Open a Word document - the tool bar should now be present

Bassett Dissection photos online

Structure of the Human Body

This site comes from the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago. It is an online resource run by Dr Fredrick Wezeman and Dr John Santaniello. Although parts of the site are password protected for current students of the medical school there is still a lot of handy resources available for you to access.

One example is Learn 'Em in which you can view diagrams of nerves and arteries, click on them and get their names. There is also a cross-sectional tutorial where you can view various parts of the body in image, MRI or CT form.

Medicine and Madison Avenue

This website contains information about medical advances throughout history and how they were supported by advertising. There are advertisements from the 19th and 20th centuries for everything from cold medications to Pfizer pharmaceutical company. It also details a timeline from the 1840s to the 1990s of medical discoveries and the regulation of advertising and drugs.

Pathology Slides

The end of semester race will soon be on for our Histopathology slides. This semester we have the added complication of not being able to use our online booking system (as it's not working at the moment). To ensure all students have a fair chance to access the slides for study the following arrangements have been made:

Half the boxes of slides have been placed in the Path Lab at Sandy Bay for the use of the first and second year med students.
The rest of the boxes of slides are available at the Clinical library for the use of the remaining med students and the medical research students. The boxes at the Clinical library may be booked up to 24 hours in advance by contacting us.

The Human Brain

Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

The 2007 Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine has just been announced.
Mario R Capecchi, Sir Martin J Evans and Oliver Smithies won for developing 'Knock-out' mice. They used stem cells to genetically modify the mice. It is now possible for scientists to insert or remove a single gene and study the effects.

Past exam papers

The library has published all previous exam papers we have access to. They may be accessed through the catalogue by doing an All Titles Alphabetical search on the course code. Just a tip though, you need to put a space between the letters and numbers of your search terms (eg. CAM 102).
The exam papers which are in our catalogue are also available on CDs which are available as reserve loans from the Clinical library.

It contains high quality images categorised under the subjects Wellcome, War, Wonderful, Witchcraft, Wellness and World. The medical images which I have viewed are of high resolution and offer great detail.

Current Print Journals

Our display of Current Print Journals has been relocated.

Current Journals can now be found next to the New Books display opposite the front desk.

We have over 80 current print journal titles. These include core clinical journals such as The Lancet, BMJ and New England Journal of Medicine. Other titles include Clinical Nursing Research, Journal of Orthopaedic Science, Journal of Neurosurgery and the Journal of Clinical Microbiology.

For assistance in locating journals or specific articles please ask at the front desk.

Who are we? Where are we?

I thought I should let you know a bit about the Clinical Library team. We are Ian, Irene, Mariola and Katrina and in total the four of us have 76 years of library experience! Ian is the Clinical Librarian and has been so for the last 9 years. Irene has worked in this library the longest (14 years) closely followed by Mariola (13 years). I am the new kid on the block having only been at Clin since February this year. During the evening and at the weekend Trevor, Donna, Beth or Jodi will be able to assist you.

We conduct classes to develop skills to effectively search for information across many platforms including electronic resources, such as databases, evidence based medical resources and the Internet.

If you need help locating a document or navigating your way through an assignment question we have plenty of experience to draw on to assist you.

Our library is available for use by UTAS staff and students, RHH staff including doctors, nurses and allied health professionals and students from other universities within the Libraries Australia Group.

The Albert Baikie Clinical Library is situated on the Ground Floor of the UTAS Clinical School in Collins Street. We are open Monday -Thursday 8.30am - 8pm, Friday 8.30am - 6pm and Saturday and Sunday 1 - 5pm.
